First of all, it is important to know the consequences of sunburned skin. The UV radiation from the sun is a major cause of skin problems. An adult burns a little more slowly than a child. As a child you have a greater chance of sunburn because cell division is much faster than in adults. A child's skin is not used to sun exposure. So if you don't apply sunscreen properly, you run the risk that it can cause major problems later, such as skin cancer. In addition, radiation contributes to premature skin aging. If you spend too much time in the sun, you will have worse skin and a greater risk of wrinkles, sagging and pigment spots all over the body. Burned skin also increases the risk of blisters. You don't want that!
What can you do to protect your skin?
There are different ways to protect your skin. The most common is to apply sunscreen. On the advice of the KWF and various dermatologists, it is recommended to use approximately 33ml in one application. That's about 6-7 teaspoons of sunscreen. When you sit in the sun, you often sweat more quickly or perhaps take a dip in the water, which reduces the protection of your sunscreen and increases the risk of sunburn. It is therefore recommended to reapply every 2 hours. It is better to apply too much than too little.
In addition to protecting yourself with sunscreen, it is smart to avoid the bright midday sun. The sun in the Netherlands is strongest between 12:00 and 15:00 and it is recommended to seek shade then. Are you going on vacation? The rule is: the closer to the equator, the stronger the sun.
Wear clothing that protects your skin to give you extra protection against the sun. Make sure you also apply sunscreen and let the sunscreen soak in. This way you prevent stains on your clothes.
